Henna Art & Arabic Dress at the Desert Camp: A Guide for Visitors
Between the adrenaline of dune bashing and the music of the evening shows, our desert camp offers two quiet traditions guests love: henna painting and Arabic dress-up. Both are complimentary on every safari, and both give you souvenirs you will treasure — a delicate design on your hand and photos in traditional Emirati attire.

What Is Henna?
Henna is a natural dye made from the dried leaves of the henna plant. Across the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa and South Asia it has been used for centuries to decorate hands and feet for weddings, Eid and other celebrations. In the UAE, intricate floral and vine patterns are especially popular.
Getting Henna at the Camp
- Choose a design — a small motif or a pattern running along your hand and fingers.
- The artist applies the paste with a fine cone; it takes only a few minutes.
- Let the paste dry (about 20–30 minutes) without touching it.
- Gently scrape it off later that night — do not wash it with water straight away.
How Long Does Henna Last?
Natural henna stains orange at first and darkens to a rich reddish-brown over 24–48 hours. It usually lasts one to two weeks, depending on your skin and how you care for it.
Aftercare tips
- Keep the paste on as long as possible (ideally a few hours).
- Avoid water on the design for the first 12 hours.
- Rub a little oil or balm over it before showering.
- Avoid scrubbing and chlorine pools for the first days.
Safety note
Only natural henna should be used. Avoid “black henna”, which can contain harmful chemicals. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, ask for a small test dot first.
Traditional Arabic Dress-Up
Want photos that really say “Arabia”? At the camp you can dress in traditional attire:
- Men: a kandura (also called thobe) — a long white robe — with a ghutra headscarf and agal cord.
- Women: an abaya — a flowing black robe — with a shayla headscarf.
It is all done with respect for local culture, and it makes for wonderful family and couple photos, especially at sunset.
Photo Ideas
- Hands with fresh henna holding a small cup of Arabic coffee.
- A couple in traditional dress silhouetted on a dune at sunset.
- Family portrait in Arabic attire next to a camel (camel ride guide).
- Pair your outfit with a falcon photo for the ultimate Emirati picture.
Arabic Hospitality at Camp
While you wait for your henna to dry, enjoy Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates — the traditional welcome in the Gulf — before dinner and the live shows begin.
