Camel Ride in Dubai: Short Ride vs Camel Safari, Tips & Animal Welfare

For thousands of years the camel was the Arabian desert’s most important companion — the “ship of the desert”. A camel ride in Dubai is the gentlest, most traditional way to experience the dunes, and for many guests it is the moment the desert truly feels like Arabia. Here is what to expect, which option to choose and a few tips for a comfortable ride.

The Short Camp Ride

Included with every Evening Desert Safari and Deluxe Desert Safari, the camp ride gives everyone the chance to feel the camel’s distinctive swaying walk and take that classic desert photo — perfect for families and first-timers.

The Extended Camel Safari

For a deeper experience, the extended camel safari takes you on a 45–60 minute guided trek through the dunes, ideally as the sun goes down. It is quiet, slow and atmospheric — the opposite of dune bashing. It is included in the Desert Safari VIP package.

How to Get On (and Off) Safely

Camels kneel to let you climb on. The tricky part is when they stand up — back legs first, then front legs — so you tip forward, then back.

  • Hold the handle in front of you with both hands.
  • Lean back as the camel rises its back legs, then sit upright.
  • Do the same in reverse when it kneels to let you off.
  • Keep your feet in the stirrups if provided and follow the handler’s instructions.

Who Can Ride?

Children from 3 years old can ride with an adult. Camel rides suit most guests who cannot do dune bashing, but pregnant guests and anyone with back problems should check with us first.

Animal Welfare

We care about our camels. They are healthy, well fed and handled by experienced handlers who treat them with respect, following UAE animal-welfare guidelines. Rides are short, rest periods are respected and the animals are never overworked.

Tips for a Great Camel Ride

  • Wear long trousers — the saddle can rub bare legs.
  • Keep your phone on a wrist strap for photos.
  • Ride at sunset for the best light.
  • Do not feed or touch the camel’s face without the handler’s permission.

Pair It With

After your ride, try sandboarding, get henna and dress in Arabic attire, or hold a falcon for a falconry photo — then settle in for dinner and the live shows.
