Dune Bashing in Dubai: What It Feels Like, Is It Safe & Who Should Skip It
Ask anyone what they remember most about their Dubai desert safari and the answer is usually the same: dune bashing. It is the thrilling heart of the evening — a 4×4 climbing steep sand ridges, racing across open flats and sliding sideways down the slopes while everyone inside laughs (and occasionally screams). Here is what to expect, how it is kept safe and how to get the most out of it.

What Is Dune Bashing?
Dune bashing is off-road driving over sand dunes in a powerful 4×4 — usually a Toyota Land Cruiser. Before the ride, the driver lets air out of the tyres for better grip, then follows routes through the dunes that combine climbs, sharp crests and sweeping slides. It is included in every desert safari package we offer.
What Does It Feel Like?
Imagine a roller coaster without rails. You feel the engine work as the car climbs, a moment of weightlessness at the top, then the sideways slide as the sand moves beneath the tyres. It looks faster from outside than it feels inside — the vehicle never goes as fast as your stomach suggests.
Where Do We Go Dune Bashing?
We drive in the Al Lahbab red dunes, about 45 km south of central Dubai. The iron-rich sand glows orange to deep red at sunset and the dunes are taller and more varied than the flatter areas close to the highway, with some crests reaching around 90 metres.
How Long Does It Last?
- Evening Desert Safari: about 30 minutes
- Morning Desert Safari: about 30 minutes
- Deluxe Desert Safari: full session in your private 4×4
- Desert Safari VIP: about 45 minutes
The ride ends with a sunset photo stop on a high dune before you continue to camp.

Is Dune Bashing Safe?
Yes — when it is done properly. Here is how we keep it that way:
- All drivers hold UAE desert-driving certification and have years of dune experience.
- Vehicles are serviced regularly and checked before every departure.
- Every vehicle carries a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and recovery equipment.
- Seatbelts are mandatory for everyone, every time.
- Drivers adjust the intensity to the guests in the car — a car with young children gets a gentler run.
Age Limits and Who Should Skip It
Children should be at least 4 years old. Dune bashing is not recommended for:
- Pregnant guests
- Guests with serious back or neck injuries
- Guests with heart conditions or recent surgery
Tell us when booking and we will arrange a gentle desert drive, so you can still enjoy the sunset, camel ride, camp and live shows.
Tips to Enjoy the Ride
- Eat lightly before pickup — save your appetite for the BBQ dinner.
- Sit in the front or middle if you are prone to motion sickness, and look at the horizon.
- Secure loose items — phones, sunglasses and hats fly around on the slides.
- Film from a steady position with both hands, or ask the driver for a slower section.
- Speak up — if you want it gentler or wilder, your driver will adjust.
Want More Adrenaline?
Take the wheel yourself on a quad bike, or try dune bashing from the wide cabin of a Hummer. Prefer something calmer? A sunrise hot air balloon shows you the dunes from above.
